The workflow

How a Barcode Solution Works

Eight steps take an identifier from first assignment to a usable report. The exact workflow varies by application: a warehouse, a billing counter and a conference desk use the same principle differently.

1

Identify the record

A product, asset, document or delegate is assigned an identifier.

2

Generate or assign a barcode

A barcode is generated or assigned to that identifier.

3

Print or display it

The barcode is printed on a label, tag or badge, or displayed on screen.

4

Scan it

A barcode scanner or reader reads the barcode.

5

Software identifies the record

The software matches the scan to the correct record.

6

Business transaction is recorded

A sale, issue, movement, check-in or registration is recorded against that record.

7

Database is updated

The underlying database is updated so the record stays current.

8

Reports become available

Operational information and reports become available to management.

Technology

1D, 2D and QR Barcodes

A short, factual comparison. For the full explanation of what a barcode is and how it is read, see our barcode basics page.

TypeTypical useData capacityReading
1D BarcodeRetail, inventory, general productsLimited (a numeric or alphanumeric code)Linear scan, one item at a time
2D BarcodeProducts, logistics, documentsHigher than 1DCamera or imager
QR CodeMobile and web links, identification, operational useHigher than 1D; QR is one type of 2D code, not a separate category from itCamera or imager

This section is informational. It does not claim that BSD has delivered a QR-code-specific project; our documented implementation experience is with 1D barcode and, separately, with RFID.

For the history, terminology and how barcodes are read, see our barcode basics page.

Comparison

Barcode vs RFID

Neither is universally better. The right choice depends on the item, the volume and how often you audit.

FactorBarcodeRFID
IdentificationOpticalRadio
Line of sightGenerally requiredGenerally not required
Multiple-item readingUsually individualCan support multiple tags together, depending on the technology
CostGenerally lowerGenerally higher
Best useProducts, inventory, general assetsLarge-scale tracking and contactless identification
BSD Infotech supports both. Where an asset or inventory workflow calls for RFID rather than barcode, see RFID asset tracking. Many deployments mix both, for example barcode labels on general items and RFID on items that are audited in bulk.

Multiple Business ProcessesInventory · Manufacturing · Warehouse · Logistics · Events

Barcode has been part of BSD Infotech's business-software experience since 2006. Over the years, we have implemented barcode-based solutions across inventory, manufacturing, warehouse operations, dispatch, billing and conference management. These projects have combined barcode hardware with software, databases, mobile applications and business-process workflows.

Manufacturing and Inventory

Product and component identification, barcode generation and printing, and, where supported, production-related workflows including raw materials, finished goods and warehouse movement through to dispatch.

Warehouse and Logistics

Goods inward and outward, stock movement, rack and location identification, wireless scanning, dispatch and inventory verification.

Conference and Events

Historical implementation experience with delegate registration, barcode badges and cards, entry and access control, and, where evidenced, lunch, kit and session control, exhibition and booth scanning, and kiosk and conference/session management functions.

Custom Barcode Integration

Barcode capability integrated with existing systems, including an existing asset database, a client’s own .NET application, and an SAP-driven retail process, based on the customer’s existing system and project requirements.

BSD has also integrated barcode workflows into broader manufacturing and business environments, connecting physical identification with inventory, production, warehouse and business processes. See customized software development.

Historical implementation

Selected Barcode Implementations

The following are anonymized examples from BSD Infotech’s historical implementation work. Client names are withheld. These examples demonstrate the types of barcode-driven business workflows BSD has designed and implemented over the years.

Historical Implementation

Manufacturing and Inventory — Client Confidential

Challenge

A manufacturing business needed to identify products and components and track them through inventory and operational workflows.

Solution

Barcode-enabled identification was designed into the inventory and manufacturing workflow, covering product and component identification and related record-keeping.

Historical Implementation

Warehouse and Logistics — Client Confidential

Challenge

A warehouse operation needed to track stock movement, location identification and dispatch.

Solution

A barcode-driven inventory and warehouse workflow was designed, covering goods movement, location identification and inventory verification.

Historical Implementation

Conference and Events — Client Confidential

Challenge

A conference and event organizer needed delegate registration and control across counters and access points at large, multi-day events.

Solution

A barcode-based registration and access-control workflow was implemented, covering delegate identification and entry control, with scanning at multiple counters.

Historical Implementation

Custom Barcode Integration — Client Confidential

Challenge

A business needed barcode identification added to a system it already had, rather than a new standalone tool.

Solution

Barcode generation and tracking were integrated into the client’s existing application and database, adding physical identification to records that already existed.

These are anonymized examples, not case studies with measured outcomes. No percentage saving, return on investment, transaction count or current-usage status is claimed for any of them, because our records do not establish one.

Frequently Asked Questions

A barcode solution combines a barcode identifier (1D, 2D or QR), the hardware that prints and reads it, and software that records what happens when it is scanned. BSD Infotech provides all three together: barcode scanners and printers, barcode software for inventory, billing, asset tracking and manufacturing, and integration with the systems you already use.
Barcode is read optically, usually one item at a time and generally with a line of sight to the label. RFID is read by radio and generally does not need a line of sight, and some RFID technology can read several tags together. Barcode labels usually cost less. Neither is universally better: the right choice depends on the asset, the volume and how you audit. See our RFID asset tracking page for the radio-based option.
Integration is available based on the customer’s existing system and project scope. BSD Infotech has integrated barcode capability into a client’s own .NET application and into an SAP-driven retail billing process, and can review your ERP or business application during the requirement stage.
Yes. Barcode scanners are the normal way to identify items in BSD Infotech’s inventory software: an item is scanned to add it to a purchase, a sale or a stock count instead of being typed in. See our inventory management software page for the software side of this.
Yes. BSD Infotech supplies barcode printers and scanners as part of a barcode solution and can also integrate barcode printing and scanning into software you already have, rather than only as a standalone system.
Yes. BSD Infotech has designed barcode-based identification into manufacturing and inventory workflows, covering product and component identification, barcode generation and printing, and finished-goods identification ahead of dispatch. The extent of coverage depends on the specific workflow.
Yes. Barcode identification supports goods-in, location identification, stock movement and dispatch in a warehouse. BSD Infotech has designed barcode-driven warehouse and logistics workflows covering these areas; wireless scanning can be used where required.
Yes. Barcode or QR labels are a common, lower-cost way to identify fixed and IT assets. BSD Infotech has also added barcode identification to a client’s existing asset database rather than only building a new one. See our asset management software page.
Yes. BSD Infotech has historical implementation experience with barcode-based delegate registration and access control at conferences and events, covering entry, session, lunch, kit and exhibition counters. See our conference management page.
