NFC Access Control System

Use NFC cards, tags or compatible contactless devices to authenticate users and manage access to designated areas.

BSD Infotech designs NFC-based access control around your site and workflow: the cards or tags, the readers, the access-point hardware where needed, and the software that checks permissions and records every entry and exit. Hardware supply, installation support, software integration and custom development are separate services, quoted to your project.

Definition

What Is NFC Access Control?

Quick answer: NFC access control uses contactless cards, tags or compatible NFC devices to identify users at an access point. When a user presents a card, an NFC reader reads it and software or an access controller checks whether that user is allowed in at that point and time. Depending on the project, the system can then record the entry, apply access rules and trigger a lock, turnstile or gate. The exact access mechanism depends on the system architecture.

Identify and verify

Identify the user from the card or tag, and verify that the user is authorised for that access point.

Record entry and exit

Record each entry and exit with date and time, and store or send the transaction data.

Apply rules and integrate

Apply access rules, trigger an access mechanism where fitted, and share data with other software.

Not every NFC reader operates a door lock. A USB NFC reader connected to a computer passes the card data to software; to open a door or turnstile, the system also needs an access controller or relay and the lock, turnstile, gate or barrier itself. Some projects need no physical barrier at all: the software shows the result to an operator, who admits the user and the entry is recorded. The final architecture may include an NFC reader, access controller, electric lock, turnstile, gate or barrier, relay, software, and a database or server, depending on the project.

Components

Typical NFC Access Control System Components

Not every project needs every component. We specify only what your access points and workflow require.

Offline

Offline NFC Access Control

Where required, the application can be designed for offline operation, depending on the deployment architecture and synchronisation requirements. Offline capability is mainly a software and system design decision, not a feature of the reader alone. Typical approaches store the user list and permissions locally at the access point or on the card, record transactions locally, and synchronise with the central database when the connection is available. We confirm what works offline for your site before quoting.

No single technology suits every site. The right choice depends on the environment, the user population, your security requirements, existing infrastructure, budget, integration needs, the number of people passing through, and whether the system must work offline. Many projects combine methods, such as a card with a PIN or a card with a fingerprint. See also fingerprint readers and visitor management.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

An NFC access control system uses contactless cards, tags or compatible NFC devices to identify users at an access point. A reader reads the card, and software or an access controller checks whether the user is allowed in, records the entry and, where fitted, operates a lock, turnstile or gate.
The user presents an NFC card or tag to a reader. The reader passes the card identity to software or an access controller, which checks the user’s permissions. Access is granted or denied, and the transaction is recorded for logs and reports. The exact steps depend on the system architecture.
Yes. For automatic door access, the NFC or contactless reader works with an access controller and an electric lock, and usually an exit button on the inside. A USB NFC reader on its own does not operate a door lock.
At minimum, NFC cards or tags, an NFC reader and software. Controlled doors or gates also need an access controller, a lock, turnstile or barrier, and usually an exit device. Larger sites add a server or network. Not every project needs every component.
Yes. The software can record each entry and exit with date and time, for logs and reports. BSD’s swimming pool application, for example, marks member entry and exit and keeps daily logs.
Where required, the application can be designed for offline operation, depending on the deployment architecture and synchronisation requirements. This is mainly a software design decision: data is stored locally and synchronised when a connection is available. A reader alone does not make a system work offline.
Often, yes. Access events can be sent to existing databases, HR, attendance, membership, school or visitor management systems, subject to technical feasibility and the available device SDK/API. BSD provides this as a chargeable integration service.
Yes, through an access controller or relay that switches the turnstile, gate or barrier. The reader identifies the user; the controller operates the barrier. Compatibility depends on the reader interface and the barrier hardware.
Yes. BSD can provide installation and configuration support for supported NFC access-control deployments. It is quoted separately from the hardware, and on-site support depends on the project location.
Yes, as a chargeable service, subject to technical feasibility and the available device SDK/API. Tell us what your software runs on and what data it needs.
Yes. BSD develops or customises software around compatible NFC readers and access-control hardware, including user management, permissions, entry/exit tracking, reports and synchronisation. Development is project-based and chargeable, and is not included in the hardware price.
The cost depends on the number of access points, the reader model, cards or tags, the controller, door or gate hardware, software, integration, installation and reporting requirements. Contact BSD Infotech with your requirements for a quotation.
It depends on where the reader is used. USB NFC readers such as the ACS ACR1252U or ACR1552U suit registration desks and PC-based entry points; Bluetooth readers suit handheld checks; wall-mounted readers with an access controller suit doors and gates. NFC readers are components, not access controllers.
Yes. BSD has demonstrated an NFC swimming pool member entry application and smart-card-based petrol pump applications, shown in the videos on this page. Client names are not published.
