What Is a Fingerprint Reader?
USB Fingerprint Scanners
A USB fingerprint scanner plugs into a PC or laptop and is driven by the manufacturer’s driver and SDK. It suits applications where your own software, or software from BSD Infotech, handles enrolment, matching and records — rather than a self-contained attendance machine on a wall.

Other HID DigitalPersona models: U.are.U 5100 and U.are.U 5160; contact us to confirm availability. Models BSD Infotech no longer supplies, each with its recommended alternative: SecuGen Hamster Plus, SecuGen Hamster IV, Futronic FS80, Futronic FS88, Startek FM220, Morpho 1300E, 3M Cogent CSD 200 and Green Bit DactyScan.
L0 and L1 Fingerprint Devices
L0 and L1 are UIDAI registered-device security levels used for Aadhaar authentication in India. With an L0 device, the fingerprint data is encrypted and signed by software on the host computer. With an L1 device, encryption and signing happen inside the scanner, so the fingerprint data is protected before it leaves the device. UIDAI has moved Aadhaar authentication to L1 devices. BSD Infotech does not currently supply L1 (Aadhaar) devices, and the DigitalPersona 4500 is not UIDAI certified.

SDK and Software Integration
An SDK (software development kit) is the set of drivers, libraries and sample code a developer uses to capture fingerprints from the scanner and match them in an application. Each scanner is used through its manufacturer’s driver and SDK, so confirm the SDK for your chosen model and operating system. BSD Infotech also develops fingerprint and biometric software and integrates scanners with existing applications.

How to Choose a Fingerprint Scanner
Aadhaar authentication
Needs a UIDAI L1 device. BSD Infotech does not currently supply L1 devices; the DigitalPersona 4500 is not UIDAI certified.
Windows software integration
The Digital Persona U.are.U 4500 is a USB scanner supported on 32-bit and 64-bit Windows, with a listed BSD price.
Your software’s SDK
If your software already supports a particular scanner or SDK, choose that model to avoid rework.
Stand-alone attendance
If you do not need a PC, an attendance machine may suit you better than a USB scanner.
Smart Card and Fingerprint Readers (Previous Models)
ACS also made readers that combine a smart card reader with a fingerprint sensor: the AET60 BioCARDKey, AET63 BioTRUSTKey and AET65. These are previous-generation products; ACS lists the AET62, AET63 and AET65 as end of life. Contact BSD Infotech for current alternatives.
